Twenty fresh cases of Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM) and two of Lassa fever have been recorded in Kano State.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso disclosed this on Friday at a press briefing. He noted that the cases of Meningitis were recorded at Dala, Tarauni Municipal, Tudun Wada, Gwale, Bebeji and Ungogo councils while that of Lassa fever was discovered in Tudun Wada also. This confirmation followed the report of eight suspected cases of Lassa fever that led to death in Tudun Wada.
The Commissioner, however, insisted that only two cases were reported, noting that samples of other cases were still under investigation. He added that the government has intensified efforts to manage the situation and has also ensured surveillance across the state.
The Commissioner disclosed that the government has released 19 million naira to vigorously combat the diseases and called on residents to report cases of intense headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and stiffness of neck to the nearest clinic.
He stated that help lines have been provided to aid the control of the situation while sensitization on the early signs of the diseases have begun in the media.
He warned residents to strictly avoid contact with rats, ensure the safety of their foods and maintain general hygiene of their environment.
