The 3rd Nigeria Family Planning Conference kicks off today at the Sheraton Hotels, Abuja with participants expected from all over the country. The theme for this year’s conference “bridging the gaps between the knowledge and practice of planning in Nigeria” and is expected to help proffer sustainable solutions to the family planning needs of Nigeria.
The conference aims to help improve access to Family Planning information and services in Nigeria and create a platform for dialogue and understanding among key stakeholders on the status of Family Planning in relation to attainment of MDGs in Nigeria among others.
Having identified youth as a key player and stake holder in the Family Planning space, the conference commenced with a Youth Pre Conference yesterday at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja.
The Pre Conference featured various interactive and brain storming sessions aimed at engaging young people to address challenges of family planning and offer actionable and sustainable recommendations.
The NoHoodieNoHoney campaign, an initiative sponsored by the United Nations Popualtions Fund (UNFPA) was also presented during the pre-conference. Presenting the video animation, the session facilitator, Adeola Olunloyo, said the aim of the video animation is to help drive home the message of condom use among sexually active young people especially females because of their early sexual debut. The video is an animation video of young people sharing knowledge and experience on issues related to contraceptive use and sexual and reproductive health.
So far, it has proved to be effective in spreading the message as the characters are not real people but graphic characters and as such cannot be directly associated with anyone. According to Adelola, the strategy is also effective because it has allowed the use of social media to massively spread the campaign message without any restrictions and challenges experienced as a result of strict policies, cultural and religious prejudices.
A DVD of the video was shared to all participants along with other materials. A facilitator guide was also shared to enable participants utilize the materials in advocacy trainings in their respective organizations.
The video is available for viewing on YouTube. The twitter hashtag is #NoHoodieNoHoney.
The youth pre conference participants were taken on a tour of the Marie Stopes family planning clinic and this helped provide more insight on various family planning issues.
The youth Family Planning stand was drafted and will be presented as the official communique by the Youth Pre Conference co Chair, Esther Agbarakwe.
